Overview for How to Save Money While Starting a New eCommerce Store
There are many websites out there where you can start your E-commerce / Dropshipping website & start your own business. But which website to choose? Shopify? WooCommerce? Bigcommerce? Wix? & blah blah others?
I’ll give you two website comparisons ie – Shopify & WooCommerce (WordPress)
Shopify for new eCommerce Stores
Shopify is the most famous & trusted brand to start a dropshipping / eCommerce store. It’s not only recognized for its eCommerce building platform but to also help people by creating blogs & Videos about succeding in eCommerce business & so.
But the real question is whether you should open an eCommerce store with Shopify or not? let’s see which help you save money while starting a new eCommerce store
Shopify Pricing is as follows –
Now if you are starting out ofcourse you will go with the basic plan which is great but keep in mind you will have to pay 2.0% of every transaction made on your store to Shopify. Plus $29 monthly fees.
Total Estimated Budget for Just Running a Website
$29 Monthly fees + 2.0% Transaction fees (Let’s suppose you make $100 in sales (not profit) 1st month) + Extra Plugins for Shopify (avg. cost $9.99/ month) + expenses other $10 = Approx – $51/- per month expenses.
Keep in mind if $100 is sales & 20% is your margin you make $20 in profit & you have to pay $51 for Shopify. Of course you will make for more than $100 per month but not in the first month right? It takes time & eventually you can afford Shopify but remember this guide is How to Save Money While Starting a New eCommerce Store?
- Easy Setup
- One-stop Customer Service
- Free Themes
- Easy UI
- Everything managed by Shopify
- Inbuild apps like Oberlo
Shopify is very simple to set up. You probably don’t need any experience to edit websites on Shopify if you are starting out. Shopify also offers a One-stop customer service that means you don’t have to worry about your website going down. Also, Shopify offers like 5-6 free themes of which the most popular is the debut theme. Shopify has a great security for your website including fraud detection. They also support apps like Oberlo which help you Import products right from Aliexpress.
- Expensive for new eCommerce / dropshipping owners
- Only 5-6 Free Themes
- Limited customizations
- Poor Page Speed
- Low SEO
- 14-day free trial
- Shopify blocking your store
As I explained before you should be ready to invest $50-$100 in Shopify just to host your website per month aside from advertising & stuff like that. While Shopify does offer free themes there are only 5-6 free themes available which are very limited to what WordPress has to offer. Even the 5-6 free themes are very limited to customization. If you are more of a design guy, chances are your website speed on Shopify will be awfully slow resulting in low customer retention & will not help you save money while starting a new eCommerce store
Also, there is no way you can do good SEO for your website so it can rank higher in the search terms with google which will result in low or No organic traffic & low or No sales. Don’t even get me started on the 14-day free trial. If you don’t know Shopify gives a 14-day free trial just to edit & setup your website. You cant do any sales or even edit your checkout page without you paying the $29 plan. So it’s basically of no use. And at last if you start off great with Shopify & everything is working fine but you get chargebacks of your products then Shopify will block Shopify payments or hell even your Shopify Account & you’ll have to start over again.
WooCommerce (WordPress) for new eCommerce stores
Where Shopify is more of an eCommerce brand, WordPress is a content management service that means WordPress is open to unlimited niches & unlimited customizations. There are over 55% of WordPress websites than any other websites on the Internet which is crazy as half of Internet websites you visit are WordPress websites.
Let’s see how a WordPress website helps us save money while starting a new eCommerce store
While WordPress websites has it’s own pros & cons let’s check out the total estimate & pros & cons of using a WordPress website.
WordPress Costing is as follows –
I personally use Hostinger & Namecheap (Not Affiliated) you can use whichever you want. It costs like $1-$5 a month. I use the $2.59 a month which is great plan in Hostinger.
Total Estimated Budget for Just Running a Website
Let’s suppose you go with the average plan – $2.59 + Almost all plugins are free but still you can get a plugin for $10 = Approx – $12.59/- per month expenses.
Now no transactional fees & no charges on anything. WordPress is the most budget-friendly. Even you can save more if you get a yearly hosting plan.
But you’ll say now Pratik I don’t know how to use a WordPress website or set-up one.
Trust me, It’s easy than getting 100 likes on Instagram. There are millions of guides out there who can teach you how to create a WordPress website in 10 mins for free with WooCommerce.

There are 1000s of free plugins which help you build a great eCommerce store & get the best security for your WordPress website.
- Slightly hard to setup compared to Shopify
- No one-stop customer support
I actually can’t think of any more con’s because I’ve been using WordPress for quite a time now but using WordPress is just great however Shopify is not like a dumb product in the market, but for me I can’t use Shopify possibly now. WordPress is difficult but not that difficult because of thousands of free guides available on youtube as well as many trusted websites like Wpbeginner which is a great website if you want to start a WordPress website. Also as there is no one-stop customer support you will have to contact your hosting account provider for any issues you have & they’ll be happy to help you as they also offer 24/7 customer support.
Okay, so are you still confused about Shopify vs WooCommerce (WordPress)?
In-Conclusion to how to save money while starting a new eCommerce store
Shopify should be used by a person who has almost no knowledge about how a website works or is not good with technical difficulties or not good with problem-solving. If you can pay $50-$100 a month as still have a budget for advertising you should go for it. If you are a newcomer & don’t have time for all the setup that WordPress requires Shopify is the best option for you.
WordPress should be used by a person who is good with problem-solving & has time to learn new things as he/she goes on. If you have a low budget but high willingness to start an eCommerce store than WordPress is right for you.
Above all, WordPress & Shopify both are great for you depends on how much you are willing to invest your time & money. However, learning WordPress can not only help you at the start but will also help you in the future for any online website you want to build.
Conclusion Shopify vs WooCommerce
I have personally used WordPress as well as Shopify so I’m biased towards WordPress, but if you are in the eCommerce business for a long run and you want to create a brand as well as save money while starting a new eCommerce store you should definitely go with WordPress as It’s the best option for a long run. You don’t want to pay 2.0% + a fear of getting blocked by Shopify right?
Shopify has its own pros & cons but so does WordPress & if WordPress has more pros & is cheap it’s not to question how to save money while starting a new eCommerce store but it’s rather why not save money while starting a new eCommerce store if you can. The money you saved can be used in advertising which in-turn will get you more sales.
But at last it’s on you which one is more convenient for you.
